On January 16, 1960 the ‘Workers Insurance Institution Hospital’ was built in Samatya, Istanbul on an area of 28604 square meters with a 560-bed capacity. Over the years, it became known by the name of it localty.

On January 16, 1960, the “Workers’ Insurance Institution Hospital” was opened with a ceremony. The President of the time, Celal Bayar, the President of the Parliament, Refik Koraltan, and the Minister of Labor, Haluk Şaman, joined the ceremony.
At that time, the hospital was one of the most modern in the Balkans. It had new technology and equipment. When it opened, 100 doctors, 65 nurses, 339 health assistants, and 53 other workers started working. In total, there were 557 workers.
The first chief doctor was Dr. Mahir Güvençer. In the same year, Dr. Saim Aksan became chief doctor and worked until the end of 1975.
Later, the hospital’s name changed to “Social Insurance Institution Istanbul Hospital.”
In 1975, Dr. Mücahit Atmanoğlu became chief doctor. He retired in 1996.
In 1978, the first dialysis center in SSK hospitals opened with 8 machines.
In 1981, a kindergarten was opened for the workers’ children. It still gives service today.
In 1985, a nurse dormitory, a dining hall for staff, and new clinic buildings were built. The terrace was closed and a new floor was added. The number of beds increased to 804.

In 1987, the Coronary Intensive Care Unit was opened by the President of the time, Kenan Evren.
In 1992, Dr. M. Fazıl Yazıcı worked as temporary chief doctor for 5 months.
From 1996 to 2000, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Caniklioğlu was the chief doctor. During this time, the Blood Center, a 5-bed Post-Op Intensive Care Unit, and the Pathology Lab were renewed and started to give service above the kindergarten. A CT scanner was added, and the Endoscopy Unit was opened. Also, most of the construction for the Emergency Unit and the Intensive Care Unit was finished.
From 2000 to 2004, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gazi Zorer was the chief doctor. In this time, the emergency unit was reorganized. The outpatient clinic was moved to Osmaniye. The main building was used for hospital admissions and special outpatient clinics. In 2001, a Central Sterilization Unit was opened. Security, Information, and Public Relations services also started. In the early 2000s, quality work began in the hospital, and in 2002, the hospital received the "TS-EN ISO – 9000 Quality Certificate." In 2003, the Intensive Care Unit was moved to the ground floor and the number of beds increased to 12. Under the Emergency Service, 4 new Emergency Operating Rooms were opened. The Operating Room floors were also restored.
Since the 1970s, people talked about putting all health services under one roof. But no one could do it. On February 19, 2005, this change happened as part of the “Health Transformation.” The hospital was given to the Ministry of Health. Its new name became “Istanbul Training and Research Hospital of the Ministry of Health.”
From 2004 to 2021, Prof. Dr. Özgür Yiğit was the chief doctor.
In 2005, the old nurse dormitory building was restored. The Biochemistry and Microbiology Labs and the Dermatology Clinic moved to this building. The Infectious

After the strengthening and restoration of the 5th and 6th parts of the main hospital building, which include most of the inpatient rooms, bathrooms and toilets were added to the patient rooms. The rooms were also furnished with chairs and televisions for the comfort of patients and their relatives.
Internet, automation, and intranet systems – important parts of today’s technology – were quickly improved. All clinics and polyclinics were equipped with computers and modern devices.
The strengthening and restoration work continues in the middle block (3rd part), where the stairs and elevators are located. The number of elevators was increased for patients and staff.
In 2021, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Toptaş became the new chief doctor.
